3rd Stop: Rhodes, Greece

Our first Greek island of the trip was Rhodes, Greece. Here we saw a Disney look alike castle, the bluest ocean I have ever seen, a scene out of Slumdog Millionaire, yep, it was sad, and a man that lived with about 20 cats, yep, it was weird. We didn't spend a ton of time exploring the city just because to be frank, there wasn't a ton to see. We spent the afternoon wandering the old city and getting lost within the cobblestone streets.

Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Just a little history for you and for myself because I did not know this.. The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes in the late 200’s BC. It is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Before its destruction, the Colossus of Rhodes stood over 107 ft high, making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world. But, since that doesn’t exist anymore, we got lost until we found the Palace of the Grand Master. It was built in the 14th century and currently, it is a museum (shocking, I know). Also it hosts meeting for the European Union upon occasion. We walked through the huge mote and made lame jokes, “I’m in a MOTE mother…” then we continued to explore the city.

We found ourselves walking out along the pier to the windmills. Situated on the long wave breaker at the harbor stand the medieval windmills which once ground the grains unloaded from merchant vessels in the harbor. We just sat there on the rocks for awhile, admiring the view and the ocean before heading back to the boat. We went to bed pretty early this night in order to be ready for Santorini the next day!
