This year, I spent my 20th birthday in Spain. It also fell on the same day as Easter but unlike when I was 9, I didn’t think that Jesus was trying to steal my day. Aurora wanted to make my day as special as possible, which was so sweet of her. The majority of my friends were already on their Spring Break vacations in other parts of Europe so I knew it would be a pretty small event but Aurora insisted on filling the day with birthday activities. So, I woke up early and went to Easter mass. I must start out this post by saying how interesting their Easter mass was. I know at home you have to get to Christmas and Easter mass especially early because it is so packed so I assumed this would be true for Spain. But with Spain’s lack of punctuality I should have assumed different. I arrived at 9:45 for 10:00 mass and I was the only person there. I walked in, slightly freaked out, and took my seat. More people trickled in but about 80% of these people looked liked tourists. Then, the mass started and I am not going to lie, I think the priest fell asleep once or twice during the service. While Spain has a very high population of Catholics, most of them are non-practicing which is why church was so deserted and mainly filled with elderly women. So, after the 30-minute mass, Aurora, Pedro and I went to San Juan for the day. We walked around a bunch then went to Fitty’s, a little tapas restaurant. We ate a delicious meal there and then came home for cake and ice cream. Erin came over for the birthday celebration which was great. Aurora bought a cake and put 20 candles on the cake. So cute! I also Skyped my family which was a nice reminder of home, and ate some more of the Easter candy that my mom had sent me. I had to catch my evening flight to Madrid which was supposed to be at 11:00 PM. Pedro was nice enough to drive me to the airport, even though we did get lost for about 20 minutes, it was a nice gesture. Ha. Now, I am sitting in the Alicante airport because my flight is delayed. I don’t mind though because tomorrow I will be sitting on an all-inclusive cruise ship, cruising through the Mediterranean. I will update after that! Love you all!
Love, Heather
