This week has just flown by! I cannot believe that it is already Thursday! Monday and Tuesday I had class, went to the gym, hung out with Aurora, the usual.
On Wednesday, however, Aurora invited me to go with her and some of her friends to "the burial of the sardina" or "El Entierro de La Sardina." It sounded fun so I told her that I would love to. She warned me that there would be many cross dressers, drunk people and people dressed in black. So, I hurried home after class and put on some black attire. This parade is actually for widows. Aurora's husband died many years ago so she put a black veil over her face. She also wore a black hat with a purple flower that was actually a loofah! Haha, so creative!
This night, however, is the farthest thing from a sad event. Everyone was gathered in the streets, very energetic and excited!
A little background on this event: The burial of the sardine takes place on Ash Wednesday and consists of a procession with a huge model fish which is finally "cremated". On this day people get rid of their colourful costumes and wear black as a sign of mourning, they fake cry at the funeral of the sardine which marks the end of the carnival. The exaggerated wailing of these "widows," who are often accompanied by some fake members of the clergy, makes this a really comical show.
A comical show it was! Haha. We followed the fish all the way through town with loud music and dancing in the streets. It was so much fun! We would stop at certain points in the street and they would slow down the music. Then, they would speed it up and get really loud and start going fast again.
It was just a great night. I am going to upload a video soon! After the Burial of the Sardine, Aurora and I walked home. I leave for Morocco on Saturday! Can't wait.
Love and miss you all! Talk to you soon! Sorry about the lack of updates lately, I will better about it once I get back! Adios!
Love, Me
